Musk who posted one tweet On May 24, he said, “US birth rate has been below minimum level for ~50 years,” pinning it to the top of his Twitter account, which has more than 100 million followers. He quietly fathered the children with Shivon Zilis, who works for Musk at The company, which plans to develop an implantable computer chip for the human brain, according to documents obtained by Business Insider.
The outlet obtained court filings changing the children’s legal names to include Musk and Zilis’ last name as part of their middle names. CNN Business could not independently confirm the contents of the documents, but a Travis County, Texas court filing obtained by CNN Business showed that the name change request was originally filed in April 2022 and granted in early May — consistent with dates in those published by Documents Business Insider. These documents contain the court’s stamp as well as Musk’s signature, which lists him as the father and Zilis as the mother.
Musk did not immediately respond to requests for comment sent to representatives from Tesla, SpaceX, and Neuralink.
Zilis’ professional ties with Musk date back at least to April 2016, when she became an advisor to OpenAI, according to her LinkedIn profile. Musk is a co-founder of OpenAI, a nonprofit research lab with the stated mission of “ensuring that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity.”
In August 2020, Musk hosted a live-streamed event to showcase the advancement of the Neuralink technology it had implanted in a pig. Nearly a year later, Neuralink claimed monkeys could play pong after the company’s chips were inserted into their brains. More recently, however, Neuralink has had to address concerns about its testing practices and dismiss allegations of animal cruelty, while confirming earlier this year that monkeys have died as part of the testing.
According to Zilis’ LinkedIn, she worked for both Tesla and Neuralink as of May 2017; and currently serves as Director of Operations and Special Projects at Neuralink. In 2020 Zilis became a board member at OpenAI. Before joining Musk-led companies, Zilis worked for a Bloomberg venture capital fund (which placed her in the 2015 Forbes 30 under 30 list for venture capital) and for IBM. She has also served on the boards of at least two other organizations related to artificial intelligence. Zilis did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
These are the second set of twins Musk currently believes have fathered. Musk and his first wife Justine had twins in 2004 before giving birth to triplets two years later. (The two, who were married from 2000 to 2008, lost their first child; Justine, an author, wrote for Marie Claire magazine in 2010 about what it was like to be married to and divorced from Musk.) Musk subsequently had two children with musician Claire Boucher, better known as Grimes. Their second child was born in December 2021 through a surrogate mother.
