Wimbledon 2022: Emma Raducanu wins center court debut, Andy Murray starts with victory

Wimbledon enters day three at the All England Club with Emma Raducanu, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic in the headlines after Serena Williams suffered a dramatic late defeat last night.

Today’s order of play sees Raducanu returning from a center court debut and looking to get past Caroline Garcia, with Murray set to be third on center with the prospect of late drama against big serve John Isner. The home favorites line up after Djokovic opened against 26-year-old Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Cameron Norrie (vs Jaume Munar), Heather Watson (vs Qiang Wang) and Harriet Dart (vs Rebeka Masarova) will be looking to keep up the momentum of an impressive first two days for British players at SW19, as will Ryan Peniston, the 26-year-old debutant , who celebrated his first Grand Slam victory in the opening round. He meets experienced American Steve Johnson first on Court 3.

Elsewhere this afternoon, exciting Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz (vs Tallon Griekspoor) and women’s world No. 2 Ons Jabeur (vs Katarzyna Kawa) compete on Court 2 and Court 3 respectively, while Wimbledon champions Angelique Kerber and Garbine Muguruza can also be seen on Court 2.

The Remarkable Story of Ryan Peniston

First up on Court 3 when the game finally starts is Ryan Peniston, who has an extraordinary story.

He said having cancer as a baby was a “blessing in disguise” because it made him “tougher as a player” after winning his debut singles match at Wimbledon.

The 26-year-old wildcard was loudly cheered on by his parents, Paul and Penny, from the sidelines of a packed pitch as they watched his triumph over Switzerland’s Henri Laaksonen.

At the age of one, Peniston was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a tumor near his stomach that required surgery and chemotherapy for years of regular checkups.

The Essex-born player has previously credited his late tennis bloom to fighting as a youngster, as he grew up “a foot shorter than all my peers”.

Rain delays begin at Wimbledon

The game is now postponed until at least 12.15pm after a series of light drizzles soaked Wimbledon and smeared the many pitches which had optimistically stripped their covers after the heaviest downpour ended around 11am.

It was a serious mistake to position myself in 3rd place this morning where there is no protection from the rain.

Rain delays begin at Wimbledon

While we wait here is a picture of Rufus the Falcon who has been keeping pigeons away from the All England Club for 15 years after taking over Hamish (also a Falcon).

As PA explain, the Wimbledon Hawk coach has revealed that in the early years of his now hugely successful career he was told to ‘get a real job’. Wayne Davis, from Corby in Northamptonshire, has been training hawks – Hamish and later Rufus – to purge pigeons from the All England Club in south-west London for 22 years.

Rain delays begin at Wimbledon

No tennis yet this morning but the forecast is looking sunny and dry this afternoon. This will come as a relief to the organizers who are already behind with several first round matches still to be played including Britain’s Harriet Dart who takes on Rebeka Masarova in 12th place.
