Lucci’s Market in Wilmington has been sold after 66 years in business

A Massachusetts market that has been in operation for more than 65 years is now under new ownership. Lucci’s Market in Wilmington was purchased by McKinnon’s Supermarkets and will operate under the McKinnon banner. Lucci’s Market owners John and Susan Lucci are retiring. John Lucci’s father, also known as John, opened the original store in 1956 with his mother, Midge. John Sr. and Midge started their market with the help of John Sr.’s parents who emigrated from Italy in the 1920’s and opened a small shop in Stoneham. Super Butcher Shop has been family owned and operated since 1946. McKinnon’s has Massachusetts locations in Danvers, Everett and Salem, and another in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. “We hope to bring together the best of the Lucci’s and McKinnon’s traditions to the Wilmington location,” said Ed and Carl Penta, brothers and co-owners of McKinnon’s, in a statement. “Lucci’s has been an important business in Wilmington for many years, and we hope to continue that tradition as an important part of the community there.” The Penta brothers said they bring their expertise and signature selection of fresh and marinated meats to Lucci’s Market But they noted that they will continue to operate the store much like John and Susan Lucci, including keeping Lucci’s famous subs and sandwiches “as is.” Additionally, the Penta brothers said all current Lucci’s Market employees will employed at McKinnon’s. “We are delighted to be selling the business to the Penta family and McKinnon’s. We are very comfortable with their ownership style and know they will treat customers, the business and employees well,” John and Susan Lucci said in a statement. McKinnon’s hopes to complete the phased transition from Lucci’s to the McKinnon’s brand in the next few weeks with a grand reopening as McKinnon’s Market in mid-July.

Lucci’s Market is known for its deli and home-cooked food made by Susan’s Kitchen and opened in the market in 2007.

McKinnon’s Supermarkets, home of the “Super Butcher Shop”, has been family owned and operated since 1946. McKinnon’s has Massachusetts locations in Danvers, Everett and Salem, and another in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
