You may be wondering which of them to choose and the question is is RTX 3080 better than PS5? Both came out in late 2020, with the 3080 coming out in September and the Playstation in November. Not a huge difference in release, but it may have resulted in some tough decisions being made.
There are, of course, some fundamental differences between the two. Being from different manufacturers leads to different architectures and therefore different optimizations and functionalities. As such, direct comparisons can be a bit difficult to reconcile.

There are some fundamental differences between the two options. First of all, the PS5 is an integrated GPU, while the 3080 is a discrete GPU. They will have different strengths and powers. Especially with the variance of the operating systems they use, they are optimized differently.
With that, let’s look at how they’re made. The 3080 is an Nvidia Ampere GPU, specifically the GA102-200. Created using Samsung’s 8nm process to create a 628mm² processor with 28.3 billion transistors. While the PS5 is an AMD Oberon GPU with the CXD90044GB. The RDNA 2.0 GPU is manufactured using TSMC’s 7nm process, resulting in a chip that is 308mm² in size. Although the transistor count is unknown as the specs are not publicly known.
If we look at some more comparable parts, there are some more standard parts that we can compare. Memory and frequency provide a basic understanding of how they work.

Now let’s see what that means in the different departments.
A graphics card’s VRAM is used as a frame buffer or pixel memory. Loading a game’s scenes requires the pixels to be stored somewhere. The video RAM is used for this. Higher capacities allow larger resolutions to work better. As well as bandwidths that allow for smoother experiences.
There are some differences in the solutions between the two. With the 3080 with 10GB of GDDR6X memory. A 320-bit bus clocked at 19 Gbit/s results in a bandwidth of 760.3 GB/s. Whereas the PS5 uses 16GB GDDR6 and opts for more capacity instead. With a 256-bit bus clocked at 14 Gbps, it has a bandwidth of 448 GB/s.
The GPU clock is an indication of how fast the silicon crystals in the chip are oscillating. This is how it processes instructions and creates the graphics you see. It’s a factor in overclocking desktop GPUs to squeeze out the extra performance.
Unlike discrete graphics cards, the onboard PS5 chip only has one clock speed. It is at a brisk 2,233 MHz. This contrasts with the base clock of 1,440 MHz and a boost clock of 1,710 MHz. Shows how AMD can run its chips faster.
The thermal design power is the total amount of energy that the board consumes at maximum load. It gives you an idea of how much you will have to spend on electricity and how much heat it will give off. There is a significant difference between the two, with the PS5 drawing just 180W while the 3080 puts out 320W. You can clearly see how efficient the console ecosystem is. Although they can also sound like jets trying to cool down.
Based on the specifications, we can estimate the theoretical performance of the two GPUs. The PS5 is targeting a float performance of 10.29 TFLOPS FP32. As well as double the performance of 643.1 GFLOPS FP64. While the 3080 has an assumed performance of 29.77 TFLOPS FP32 float performance and a dual performance of 465.1 GFLOPS FP64.
When gaming, the PS5 can hit either a 4k 60fps or a lower resolution 120fps performance mode. High performance for the integrated graphics it contains. While the 3080 can easily hit 90 FPS at 4K with a much higher frame rate of 1440p and easily over 180 FPS at 1080p. So it can outperform the console in most applications, but there are other factors to consider.
An important factor to consider is the price of the two GPUs. The PS5 had an introductory price of $499, or $399 for the digital edition. While the 3080 has an MSRP of $699 or $799, it costs between $200 and $400 more. Although the price for it doesn’t include the entire system to run everything you need.

Is RTX 3080 better than PS5?
Overall, the RTX 3080 is better in terms of raw performance. But it costs quite a bit more and you don’t get the full package like you would with a console. It requires a lot more hardware and expense. While the console offers a lot more convenience and plug-and-play at a much cheaper price, it may not quite reach the level of performance.
Although there is a lot more. Consoles are more limited in what you can accomplish with them. Because PCs are much more open and flexible and you can do much more than just play and stream. While Sony does have some good exclusives for you, they’re slowly coming to PC too, so even that advantage may fade.
