AMD is said to expand the AM4 Ryzen CPU lineup with new 3D V-Cache and low-end chips

AMD isn’t done with AM4 yet, they confirmed that themselves, but what exactly does the red team plan to do with the further development of the platform? Well, the answer would be to expand it with even more Ryzen CPUs with 3D V-Cache and low-end options.

AMD’s AM4 Longevity Plans: More Ryzen 3D V-Cache and Low-End Options in the Works?

There have been various rumors about what AMD is planning with its AM4 platform after the company unveiled its AM5 platform. The AM5 platform is the way forward, featuring Ryzen 7000 CPUs with Zen 4 cores and DDR5/PCIe 5.0 support. However, AMD knows that the vast majority of its user base will not make the switch to AM5 just yet. As such, AMD gave us a taste of what to expect on the platform with its Ryzen 7 5800X3D and several mainstream Ryzen 5000 options. Based on the latest rumours, it looks like we’ll be seeing more of this action on the AM4 platform in the coming months.

Delicious, Greymon55, states that the rumors that AMD is preparing not one but several Zen 3D products under the AM4 banner are true and that there will be more information later this month. Note that only Zen 3D is mentioned, meaning we’ll be getting new CPUs under the Ryzen 5000 family. AMD’s 5800X3D is based on the 5800X with increased cache and retains the 8-core/16-thread design.

It is possible that the next additions will be based on Ryzen 5 5600X, Ryzen 9 5900X and Ryzen 9 5950X. We can’t say exactly which SKU will get the 3D V-Cache treatment, but 5600X3D will be a single CCD V-Cache chip offering up to 32MB L3 + 64MB LLC (V-Cache). The Ryzen 9 parts will theoretically have two V-cache CCDs, so 64MB L3 + 128MB LLC (V-cache) or 64MB per CCD for a total of 192MB cache. If you also add the 8MB of L2, you get a total of 200MB of L3 cache.

Well, an interesting way AMD could go with a Ryzen 9 V-cache part is to offer a single CCD with V-cache and the other without V-cache to make a total of 128MB of cache. That’s still 33% more cache than the 5800X3D and should result in impressive gaming performance numbers. But as mentioned, we can’t confirm whether such a SKU exists or not, only that AMD might be working on it. As for the low-end parts, it’s possible that AMD plans to replace its Ryzen 4000 Renoir X chips with Cezanne X chips under the Ryzen 5000 family. Cezanne-X with Zen 3 cores will offer better performance and give a good chance for the red team to be competitive against Intel’s budget Alder Lake and Raptor Lake CPUs until Zen 4 becomes mainstream.

These 3D V-Cache Ryzen 5000 CPUs will allow users on AM4 to have something new without having to change their entire platform by migrating to AM5. With that in mind, AM5 will also receive an updated Zen 4 V-Cache lineup by the end of this year, giving avid gamers the option of either sticking with their existing AM4 setups and using a Zen 3D part, or in the premium Version to go all out Zen 4D series.
